About DTV
For several years, WMFE will operate two
signals - WMFE -TV Analog Channel 24 and WMFE-DT Digital
Channel 24.
The Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) requires that
WMFE operate Analog Channel 24 simultaneously with Digital
Channel 24 until 85 percent of the homes using televisions
in the Central Florida market area can receive a digital
TV signal on their TV. At that point - expected to occur
no earlier than 2006 - Analog Channel 24's spectrum
space will revert to the federal government.
Digital television allows WMFE to telecast
in much higher resolution and clarity than standard
analog television. With an HDTV receiver, you and other
viewers at home, at school or in the workplace can receive
high-quality, crystal clear pictures and CD quality
surround sound.
One
of our new channels. WMFE-HD, offers high definition
(HD) programs when available. Perfect for the content
of public television, HD offers visually stunning pictures
-- with more than twice the resolution and clarity of
standard television. Plus, the images are displayed
in a wide screen format with a 16 by 9 width to height
ratio compared to today's basically square format of
4 by 3 units (the current standard).
Vision -- An Electronically
Connected Community Without Gates
Digital technology is transforming
your connection to the world. Cell phones and the Internet
are just two examples of this revolution in communications.
Now, the language of computer bits and
bytes is creating a bold new world of digital television.
. .and a bold new vision and opportunity for WMFE!
WMFE uses the benefits of "DTV"
-- multiple channels and improved reception -- to continue
bringing you and the residents of Central Florida the
quality content, educational resources, and child-safe
haven of public television, yet with the greater opportunity
the technology offers!
DTV is WMFE's opportunity to create a "library"
for you with unlimited shelf space...by enhancing its
role as an educational institution whose doors are open
to all...a performance hall that is free to the public.
In short, an electronic community without gates.
Only WMFE uses its digital spectrum to
ensure that you and all Central Floridians have equal
and free access to high quality educational services
and programming in the digital era.
WMFE's new digital programming services
are a unique source of noncommercial content that advances
education, culture and citizenship, particularly from
a local, Central Florida perspective.
As WMFE "expands its reach" with
this new technology, the station accomplishes an even
greater goal - one of realizing that this technology
is simply a sophisticated means to an important public
service end.
