What retirement gift do you offer a colleague who’s given WMFE 40 consecutive years of his life?
José A. Fajardo, President of WMFE, suggested that instead of a gold watch, WMFE give its former
president, Stephen McKenney Steck, a trip to an ancient city. Fajardo loaned him a microphone
and a recorder, and told Steck to bring back a “story.”
In this first feature we hear Steve’s Story, which includes remarks from ...

David Weissert
David Weissert (age 44) was born in Upper Michigan and has lived in Florida since 1988. He and his wife, also a marathoner, are parents of a 4 year old daughter. Employed by the same company for 14 years, he trains building officials, contractors and engineers.
David developed epilepsy at the age of 11, experiencing a multi-year series of grand mall seizures. He has had two knee surgeries in his early 20’s and a pin surgically placed in his leg. David has been overweight most of his life with resulting high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Since starting his marathon training he has lost substantial weight and has effectively reduced his blood pressure and cholesterol levels. David is now seizure-free as a result of more effective and consistent medication.

Nita Kay LeMay
I am 56 years old and have run a marathon in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., all 13 Canadian provinces and territories, and on each of the 7 continents. I am the second woman in the world to have accomplished this feat and the first who is legally blind. I was diagnosed with macular degeneration in my 20s. I have partial peripheral vision and very limited central focus. My greatest challenge isn't the distance but, rather, getting to the marathons on my own and running without a guide. My current goal is to run marathons in all eight Australian states and territories.
