In part-1 of Steve’s Story, we left WMFE’s former president soon after his start in a 26.2-mile
marathon in Athens, Greece. Did the inspiration from other runners we heard on the run stay with

Many a breathless footfall remains for our colleague, Stephen McKenney Steck to finish this
adventuresome gift WMFE gave him on his retirement.

Amby Burfoot:
Footloose: Amby Burfoot's notes from the Road

Amby Burfoot has been a senior editor at Runner's World Magazine for more than three decades, covering everyone from Bill Rodgers and Joan Samuelson to Ryan Hall and Deena Kastor. A former Boston Marathon winner (1968) and still an active runner at 62, he is a member of the Road Runner's Club of America Hall of Fame and the Distance Running Hall of Fame. He has won numerous journalism awards, and has written four running books, including The Runner's Guide To The Meaning Of Life.

Deena Kastor:

Deena Kastor is the 2004 Olympic marathon bronze medalist in Athens, Greece. Kastor’s bronze medal was the first U.S. medal in the Olympic Marathon since Joan Benoit’s gold medal victory at the inaugural women’s Olympic Marathon in Los Angeles in 1984. Deena ran the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon in two hours 29 minutes 35 seconds making her one of three USA women starters at the Beijing Olympic Marathon. Deena won the 2006 Flora London Marathon (2:19:36). She has also won the Chicago Marathon (2:21:25).

Jon Hughes:

The co-owner of Track Shack and EMMI, Jon now produces more than 40 running and walking events annually, including the Walt Disney World Marathon.  He began running in high school and ran at Winter Park High, Seminole Community College, and Appalachian State University. He has since completed 12 marathons, including Boston, Berlin, Chicago and Marine Corps. Since the 1970’s, Jon has been recognized for his outstanding leadership by the Florida Athletics Congress, the Pan American Junior Games, the Governor of Florida, and the Grand Bahamas Promotions Board. Jon was admitted into the Florida Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1987.

Kathy Lubbers:
Kathy G. Lubbers lives with her husband, Paul in Key Biscayne, Florida where they fish, walk, entertain and travel for fun.

As President and CEO of Gingrich Communications, Kathy oversees a variety of activities of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
                       
Having experienced Rheumatoid Arthritis for over 20 years, Kathy’s activities as a Board Member of the Arthritis Foundation focus on raising funds and awareness in support of research and community-based education programs for the 46 million individual affected by arthritis.                 
                                                     
Kathy holds a BA in Religion from Davidson College and uses it daily!
